The Lake District: Saturday 22nd September 2018
We are delighted to announce details of this year’s Gathering of Scholars and Annual General Meeting of the Trust, to be held in and around the Lake District on Saturday 22nd September 2017.
Moving north from our last gathering, this year we are investigating the Vernacular and Arts and Crafts buildings of the Lake District. We begin the day at the Castle Dairy, Kendal, a Cumbrian Hall House c.1560; just a short walk from the railway station. This will be followed by an earlier than usual AGM aboard a coach as we travel to Furness Abbey for picnic lunch and tours. In the afternoon we will travel by Classic Coach to Coniston Water to board a steam gondola bound for Brantwood House, the former home of John Ruskin, for afternoon tea and tours. Finally, we will be transported by Classic coach to Broad Leys, c.1899 by Voysey, and home of Windermere Motor Boat Club, for tours and fizz. A sit down dinner is available for those who wish to join; return transport to Kendal is available by coach if you are not joining dinner, or later by private taxis.
On Sunday, John Bucknell has kindly invited us for Brunch at his home, Hollin Hill Farm house, a traditional Cumbrian Yeoman’s farmhouse Grade II* Listed, c.1712. For those who are able, John will arrange an afternoon of local visits.
Limited rooms are available at Broad Leys (book direct) and limited free camping also at Broad Leys (please book via ticketsource/return form accordingly); alternatively there are many camping or accommodation options in Windermere or Kendal to suit all budgets.
Scholars will soon receive all documents via email, if you have not please do contact us. Alternatively all necessary information can be downloaded here:
We look forward to seeing you all in September.
