MRS MONICA DANCE OBE (1913 – 1999)
Monica Dance was Acting Secretary and then Secretary of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) from 1942. During this time she also became Honorary Secretary of the Wind and Watermills Group, Acting Secretary for the Georgian Group during the war years, and Acting Secretary of the Victorian Society upon its founding. Amongst other honours, Mrs Dance was awarded the MBE and subsequently OBE in 1979 for her outstanding service to conservation. She was made an honorary member of the RIBA in 1977. Together with her husband Harry, she was responsible for saving a number of historic buildings, receiving the Esher award for this work in 1983.
It is the aim of The Dance Scholarship Trust to acknowledge with gratitude the untiring dedication of Monica Dance to conservation in general, and to the aims and principles of the SPAB Scholarship in particular, both during her many years as secretary to the SPAB, and after her retirement in 1978.
